The Virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer

Hyper-V move between similar hardware fails.

I needed to move a Hyper-V based virtual server from one server to another, to perform hardware maintenance on its host. When I tried to move the server, I got the following error:

“The Virtual Machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. “

The Virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer
Hardware not compatible

The 2 servers were the same model, same processor and memory (Dell PowerEdge R630). I investigated further and found that Dell had made significant changes in a BIOS update.

I checked the 2 servers and found the BIOS Versions were different.

BIOS on the original server
BIOS on the destination server

I updated the BIOS on the destination server to match the original host, and was then able to move the virtual server without errors.

I hope this solves your problem with the “The Virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer” error.

Please let me know in the comments below,

Thanks

Ian
